- Demonstrates accountability for professional development to enhance practice and patient care. Actively engages in unit-based governance, goal setting, and supports change initiatives to improve care and the work environment. Functions as a committed care team partner, assisting and collaborating as needed. Participates in efforts to improve patient care and adapts flexibly to change.
- Applies the nursing process within Relationship Based Care to foster healing. Develops daily goals and care plans with patients as partners, addressing holistic needs. Uses critical thinking to identify clinical and psychosocial issues. Communicates effectively with care providers, advocates for care changes, and ensures thorough documentation. - Applies adult learning principles in teaching patients, families, students, and staff. Provides appropriate education for care transitions. Supports staff development and may serve as a preceptor. Encourages open dialogue and continuous improvement through feedback.
- Participates in unit-specific quality improvement. Identifies opportunities and takes responsibility for enhancing patient satisfaction. Uses evidence-based practice to improve care, discusses research at rounds, and influences care plans.
- Maintains productive relationships through accountability, enthusiasm, and cultural awareness. Promotes healthy peer interactions and work-life balance. Models safe work hours and lifestyle. Reports workplace safety hazards.
- Performs scrub role (required for RNs hired after July 1, 2023). Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors. Performs other duties as assigned.
- Experience: 0–2 years; BSN preferred
- Skills: Ability to provide age-appropriate care, apply growth and development principles, assess patient data, and respond to age-specific needs per department policy
- Interpersonal: Strong relationship-building with all levels of staff and patients/families
- Work Environment: Able to work effectively in complex settings with shifting priorities and specialized equipment
- Clinical Judgment: Strong critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills; ability to lead others in applying the nursing process
- Physical Requirements: Mobility, manual dexterity, and stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and patient positioning
- Current RN license
- CPR certification (AHA standards) within 30 days of hire
- UPMC-approved national certification preferred
- UPMC offers flexible scheduling options, including night/weekend programs with premium pay (requires 6+ months of nursing experience and orientation during regular hours)
- Act 34 clearance required
